How the Great Willie Mays Inspired A 7 Year Old Kid
Benson
also loves
sports.
He started playing baseball with his uncle at an early age of
three. When Benson was 7 years old, he heard from some friends
that his hero, Willie Mays - moved in to the neighborhood, right down
the
street. One morning, Benson
informed his mom that he felt too sick to go to
school. When his mom was leaving for work, she told him, "Stay
in bed and No TV orPlaying
Around." Shortly after Benson'smom left Baseball Great Willie
Mays& Ben
Benson got outofbed and put on his SF celebrating Willie's
birthday in
Giants jersey and cap...with glove, bat,
ball,
Willie's kitchen.
and autograph book in hand...headed down the street to pay Willie
Mays a visit. When Willie answered the door, Benson's
Benson was on cloud nine...
dream had
been answered. When Benson asked to see Willie's trophys,
Willie took Benson upstairs and showed him his pictures, golden
gloves, gold bats, balls, and other trophys. When Benson finally left
Willie's apartment, Benson was on cloud nine, the happiest kid in the
world. Benson even got to be a batboy for a day with the SF
Giants. Willie Mays' kindness
helped set the tone for Benson's love for
sports. The simple dream of meeting Willie Mays also
helped mold Benson's positive outlook on life and gave him the
excitement,
confidence and knowingness that he could create and have just about
anything he wanted in life.

DRUMLAND
- "the
place all the great drummers used to
hang
out"
Benson started
playing the drums at the age of
eight.
Benson was inspired by many drummers. As an eight
year old, he used to hang around Drumland, the place where all the
drummers used to go to while in San Francisco. The owner, Kenny
Williams was impressed with Benson's excitement, passion, and desire to
learn at
such a young age. Kenny introduced Benson to many musicians that
were in town. One great musician by the name of Johnny
Rae, who
also worked at Drumland, took young Benson under his wing.
Benson constantly asked
Johnny Rae questions about different songs, beats, and rhythms and how
he
would play them. John would take Benson in to the practice room, lay
down the beats and let Benson beat on the drum set for hours. This
happened for the next seven years. In
that time, Benson also received an education from other great drummers,
such as Art Blakey,
Joe
Morello, Sonny
Payne, Ed Thigpen,
Sonny
Johnson, Shep Shepard, Herbie Stamps, and Louie Bellson.
The day Stan Getz showed
up at Benson's
home...was the beginning of a wonderful personal and musical
relationship
When Benson was 12
years old, he went in to a record store and picked
up a Stan Getz album called, "Getz Au Go Go." He bought it and
fell in love with Stan Getz
music. Benson spent many hours
playing his drums along with the songs in the album, visualizing and
dreaming of himself on stage playing along with Stan Getz. Benson
felt at the age of 12 that there was some kind of connection with Stan,
and that some day they would meet.
One of
Benson's fondest moments happened in the
early 1980's
when Stan Getz showed up at Benson's home for a spiritual consultation
and healing session. Stan was referred to Benson by one of Benson's
students. The student didn't tell Benson that it was Stan Getz. All
Benson knew was that a gentleman named Stan wanted to meet with him.
That was the beginning
of a wonderful personal and
musicalrelationship, up until
Stan's passing in 1991. The

When Benson was 14 years old, he began playing with
the Fred Washington Jazz Trio in his
father's restaurant/nightclub, "The China Doll" on Post Street,
near Union Square
in San Francisco. The China Doll was a hotspot for
jazz
enthusiasts and musicians
in town.
Over the years, Benson got to learn and jam with some of the greatest,
such as Ralph
and Johnny Mathis,
Vernon Alley, Sonny Johnson, Shep Sheppard, Stan
Getz, Wayne Shorter, Erroll
Garner, Cal Tjader, Johnny Rae, Earl
"Father" Hines, Oscar Peterson,
Ray
Brown, and Ed Thigpen, to name a few.
Ben was
honored to be jamm'n with some of the Greatest! Kenny Baron,
Stan Getz, Rufus Reid, Ben Wong, Dizzy Gillespie,
and Wayne

When
Benson was in his mid-twenties, his interest in learning more about the
metaphysical world grew. Benson met Lee Hinton, and they quickly
became close friends and brothers. Lee encouraged and motivated
Benson to actively use his clairvoyant abilities. "Lee and I have
been friends for almost
30 years. We have a real spiritual
connection. We motivate
and validate each other all the
time."
